Essex Westford School District (EWSD) has an opportunity for a Student Management Assistant to join the team at Essex Elementary School. This role supports teachers in their efforts to address the needs of students who lack effective communication, problem-solving, and social and emotional skills.

Primary job duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Monitor student behavior and provide necessary social skills instruction and behavior intervention as necessary during unstructured school activities (immediately before and after school, lunch, recess, hallway pass time, etc.).
  • Serve as an active member of the school's Student Support Team, SEL Team, Child Protection Team (CPT), Crisis Response Team (CRT), School Safety Team, and other teams as needed; provide requested support for the implementation of behavior management interventions.
  • Attend and participate in EST, 504, IEP, and other evaluation team meetings as directed or requested for students on behavior plans or in need of a behavior plan; plays a key role in assessing and defining the behavior, gathering, and analyzing information, determining the reason for the behavior, and developing/modifying student behavior plans.
  • Serve as a resource for teachers and administrators who are concerned about student development and/or discipline.
  • Provide crisis management; intervene with students as needed to avoid negative or explosive behavior.
  • Per district policy and procedure, investigate reports of bullying, hazing, harassment, and/or retaliation under the supervisor of the Principal.

Individuals with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, mental health, special education, OR a minimum of two years of higher education, plus 5 years of relevant experience working with behavioral challenges, OR a combination of education and experience which results in comparable knowledge and skills.
  • CPR and First Aid certification and CPI training are required.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with elementary and middle school students, practices, and pedagogy.
  • Understanding of child developmental and age-appropriate behaviors.
  • Knowledge of best practices in behavior management, restorative practices, mindfulness, PBIS, and Responsive Classroom; ability to use and implement strategies and practices found in these programs.
